Fish is usually my answer for a quick, easy, and delicious dinner. I always have frozen shrimp on hand, but almost every week, I’ll grab salmon or cod from the grocery store, too. What’s So Great About the Wild Alaskan Company Wild Combo Box?
Started in 2017, as an answer to the epidemic of wrongly labeled fish, Wild Alaskan Company is a subscription service that makes it super easy to get wild-caught seafood delivered directly to your door. The brand offers four different types of boxes: the Wild Salmon Box, the Wild White Fish Box, the Wild Combo Box, and a custom option. After choosing your box, you’ll pick whether you want to receive 12 or 24 (6-ounce servings) and how often (every month, six weeks, or two months).
I prefer a variety, so I opted for the Wild Combo Box. It’s the most popular, according to the brand’s website, and I can absolutely see why. The exact items change week to week, but mine came with 12 servings that included filets of two different types of salmon (sockeye and and coho), Pacific cod, Pacific halibut, and chunks of wild Alaskan pollock perfect for fish tacos. All the fish arrived frozen, so I tossed them into my freezer and thawed the individually wrapped portions in my fridge a day, or at least the morning, before I cooked it.
My 12-serving box usually costs $145, but the brand offers a $25 discount on the first box. It ended up costing $120, which nets out to $10 per serving (or $12 per serving without the discount).
What’s the Best Way to Enjoy the Wild Alaskan Company Wild Combo Box?
There are two ways I usually eat fish: roasted in the oven for an easy one-pan meal or cut up and sauteéd for fish tacos. I used the fish in my Wild Combo Box for both — and everything turned out delicious. I tried the coho salmon first, seasoning it with just olive oil, salt, and pepper before roasting it. The result was a tender, rich filet that easily flaked apart. The flavor of the fish itself was fairly mild, allowing the bright, lemony chimichurri I finished it with to really do the talking.
My favorite item in the box was the pollock chunks. I tossed them in cajun seasoning and sautéed them in olive oil. It took less than five minutes for them to cook all the way through. The flaky pollock had a slightly sweet but overall very light flavor. I actually found myself snacking on the little pieces of fish before making my taco. They were that good and way too easy to eat as little nuggets.
I’ve had the contents of this box in my freezer for three weeks now, and I still have three filets and one serving of pollock nuggets left. As someone who eats fish multiple times a week at home, I love that this box allows me to have really nice quality fish in my freezer, so I don’t have to gamble with what I might find at the grocery store.
