If you’ve recently swapped out overpriced eggs for egg substitutes and alternatives, check your fridge. Four different egg substitutes from Egg Beaters and Bob Evans have been recalled, and if you happen to have any of these products in your kitchen you’re going to want to toss them ASAP.
On March 28, the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a Class III recall on four egg substitute products across both brands. The recall is due to the possibility that sodium hypochlorite, a cleaning solution, could be present in the food.
If you’ve already consumed these products, don’t let the recall scare you. A Class III recall is the least serious of three different types of food recalls that can be issued, and it just means that consuming the product could possibly make you sick, but it’s not likely.
Additionally, the recall only applies to egg substitutes in eight states. The states impacted by the recall are Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. You only need to check your fridge if you live or shop in any of those states.
Check Your Egg Substitutes
If you happen to have any egg substitutes from Egg Beaters or Bob Evans in your fridge, checking to see if they’re included in the recall is easy. Here’s what to look for:
What if You Have Recalled Products?
The same way that people with cans of recalled Coca-Cola were advised to discard any recalled cans, should you discover that you have recalled products in your fridge, toss them right away or return them to the store where you purchased it. While chances are that eating the recalled egg substitutes won’t cause any harm, you definitely don’t want to risk it.
